A secure, department-built generative-AI assistant helps NSW's ~2,200 public schools draft lesson materials and differentiated resources; scaled statewide by 2025, though all efficiency claims come from the department's own surveys, with no independent evaluation yet published.
NSWEduChat is a secure, purpose-built generative-AI assistant developed by the New South Wales Department of Education (Australia) to help public-school teachers draft lesson materials, differentiated resources, quizzes and feedback.
It began as a 16-school pilot in Term 1 2024, expanded to 50 schools in Term 2 2024, and was rolled out to all teaching staff across NSW's roughly 2,200 public schools during 2024-25; from Term 4 2025 it was also extended to students in Years 5-12.
The department reports teacher time savings, reduced workload and easier drafting of differentiated content, but these effectiveness claims come solely from its own internal trial surveys. The scale of the rollout itself, including the 16-to-50-school trial progression and the 2025 student expansion, is independently corroborated by the policy-tracking outlet Digital Watch Observatory and a NSW Government ministerial release, though no independent evaluation of learning outcomes or efficiency gains has been published.
The Department itself cautions staff that the tool 'may not always be accurate' and that outputs require verification, and no independent academic study of its effectiveness was found.
