EcoTree, a Brest-based forestry-investment platform, converted 10 hectares of former farmland on the Danish island of Orø into a mixed, irregular forest, planting 40,000 trees across ten species since 2023.
Since 2023, EcoTree — a forestry-investment platform founded in 2014 that sells individuals and companies shares in individual trees — has converted roughly 10 hectares of former farmland on Orø, a small island in Denmark's Isefjord near Holbæk, into its third Danish forest project. The first 4.5 hectares were planted in 2024 with Oak, Beech, Hornbeam, Wild Cherry and Larch; a 2025 phase extended planting to ten tree species, including Sessile Oak, across the remaining area, bringing the total to roughly 40,000 trees.
The project is designed as a "sustainable, irregular forest" for ecosystem restoration rather than timber production, and is paired with a companion agroforestry initiative run with local partner Orø Fællesjord that explicitly targets biodiversity, water quality and support for local producers. One year in, EcoTree reports visible early growth but has not published survival-rate or species-count data; the company itself is well capitalised (a 2022 €12m Series B led by Société Générale) and manages 64 forests on roughly 1,800 hectares across France and Denmark, giving the model a track record beyond this single, still-young site.
