Context

Lake Prespa is a transboundary basin shared by Albania, Greece and North Macedonia, hosting more than 2,000 recorded species but degrading from heavy pesticide and fertiliser use, waste dumped along its shores, and untreated sewage causing eutrophication. Under the 2000 trilateral Prespa Park agreement, North Macedonia's Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, the Municipality of Resen, UNDP and the Global Environment Facility ran the Integrated Ecosystem Management project from 2012 to 2018.

Activities

The project trained farmers in reduced-input orchard management through a model orchard, built sewage treatment and composting facilities in place of lakeside dumping, and restored wetlands and eroded slopes through reforestation.

Results

UNDP and GEF report that farmers cut pesticide application by roughly 30% per season and irrigation water use by nearly 60%, that more than 80% of local farmers adopted agro-ecological practices, and that indigenous fish populations began recovering.

Conclusions

The approach continued under the follow-on 'EU for Prespa' programme. No independently published, population-level biodiversity monitoring data is cited beyond the qualitative fish-recovery reports, so ecological outcomes are better evidenced for water and soil than for biodiversity as such.
