Context

PRIA-MA is Spain's national cognitive-behavioural group programme for men convicted of intimate-partner-violence offences serving community sentences, run by the Ministry of the Interior's prison/probation service since 2015.

Results

8,843 offenders began the programme in 2022, a 13.4% rise from 7,800 in 2021. A controlled study of 770 participants (635 treatment, 135 waiting-list) found significant reductions in sexist attitudes, anger and denial of responsibility. A separate cohort found 6.3% police-recorded recidivism among completers versus 11.7% among dropouts.

Conclusions

No evaluation is a randomised controlled trial, recidivism is measured via police records (likely undercounting true reoffending), and the 21.8% dropout rate is a documented weakness.
