Restoration of Petra's ancient Nabataean dams and terraces, combined with native vegetation cover, cut peak flood flows and infiltrated over half of flash-flood runoff, with hydrological modelling showing vegetation greening alone reduced catchment streamflow by up to 20%.
Petra's 2,000-year-old sandstone monuments face recurring flash floods and erosion, a risk that the Nabataeans themselves had engineered against with an extensive system of check dams, bench terraces, cisterns and channels that fell into disrepair over the centuries.
The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority, working with Jordanian and international hydrology researchers, restored four of the historic check dams using on-site stone and re-established bench terracing, while assessing native vegetation cover across the surrounding catchments as a complementary, lower-cost erosion-control measure alongside the engineered structures.
Hydrological modelling published in the Journal of Hydrology found the restored check dams infiltrate more than half of flash-flood event volume and substantially cut peak flow velocity, while vegetation greening alone reduced catchment-wide streamflow by 9.9-19.8% across three studied sub-catchments. Independent heritage-climate risk assessments corroborate flash flooding as Petra's principal climate hazard, underscoring the restoration's relevance, though published monitoring of the restored dams' long-term structural durability remains limited.
