Description

Singapore's national water agency PUB purifies treated used water with microfiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet disinfection to produce NEWater, used mainly for industry and blended into reservoirs for drinking supply.
Five NEWater plants now meet about 40% of national demand; PUB projects this to reach about 55% by 2060. Published capacity figures vary between sources (roughly 285 million m3/year for the five plants in one study), so figures should be checked against PUB publications.
The case is notable for sustained public communication and a long-term closed-loop water strategy. Evidence is mostly operator-reported and the scheme is energy-intensive; ecological co-benefits (carbon, biodiversity) are not documented.
