Context

Singapore's Ministry of Education (MOE) has paired a formal AI-in-Education (AIEd) Ethics Framework with a growing set of AI tools built into its Student Learning Space (SLS), the national online platform every public school has used since 2018. The AIEd Framework, built on the national Model AI Governance Framework from the Infocomm Media Development Authority, sets out four principles — Agency, Inclusivity, Fairness and Safety — meant to govern how AI is designed and used in classrooms, alongside the existing Ethos of the Teaching Profession. It sits under the September 2023 EdTech Masterplan 2030.

Activities

On the SLS platform itself, MOE and GovTech Singapore have rolled out an Adaptive Learning System for mathematics and geography, an Authoring Co-pilot for lesson planning, a Short Answer Feedback Assistant, a Data Assistant for engagement analytics, and an Appraiser tool that drafts student testimonials.

Results

GovTech reports Appraiser alone is used by more than 4,000 teachers, who have generated over 40,000 testimonial drafts — freeing time MOE says teachers redirect to pastoral and social-emotional support.

Conclusions

The adoption figures published so far measure time saved and tool uptake among teachers, not independently verified gains in student learning outcomes, and no third-party audit of the ethics framework's real-world enforcement was found in the sources reviewed.
