Context

The Skjern was straightened and drained in the 1960s-70s for farmland, destroying one of Denmark's largest river valleys and its wildlife.

Activities

Between 2001 and 2004 an EU LIFE-Nature project reworked 19 km of channel into 26 km of meandering river with 46 new meanders across 875 ha of floodplain, re-establishing about 1,200 ha of grassland and creating the new 5 km2 Hestholm Lake, at a cost of €7.36 million (€2.2 million EU LIFE co-financed).

Results

By 2002, breeding bird surveys recorded bittern going from zero to four pairs, avocet reaching 85 pairs, and pink-footed geese numbering 1,780-2,000 individuals; nutrient retention across the restored valley reached roughly 10%, and visitor numbers hit 350,000-400,000.

Conclusions

A peer-reviewed follow-up study ten years on confirmed the restored channel forms and habitat gains had persisted, making Skjern one of the most rigorously monitored river restorations in Europe — though the ~10% nutrient-retention figure is modest against broader eutrophication pressures.
