STEAM for Vietnam, backed by a Google.org AI for Changemakers grant, trained 17,000 teachers to AI literacy readiness in 60 days across Dien Bien — Vietnam's poorest, most ethnic-minority province (80% of teachers serve minority communities) — via a district-cascade model with 1,
STEAM for Vietnam, a nonprofit education organisation, used a Google.org 'AI for Changemakers' grant (one of 30 awarded globally) to run a 60-day AI-literacy training sprint across Dien Bien, Vietnam's most remote highland province, where roughly 80% of teachers serve ethnic-minority communities. The rollout sits within Vietnam's national Resolution 71/57-NQ mandate for AI literacy in every classroom.
The programme aimed to bring every teacher in the province to a baseline of AI-literacy readiness within 60 days, using a three-tier cascade model -- training district officials and principals first, then master teachers, then classroom educators -- so that skills could spread in parallel across all seven districts.
Using the cascade structure, organisers trained 17,000 teachers across 7 districts in parallel within the 60-day window, reaching what organisers describe as 100% AI-readiness coverage of the province's teaching workforce. A subset of 1,999 participating teachers completed a pre/post assessment of self-reported AI-tool confidence and classroom application.
The pre/post assessment of 1,999 teachers found measurable gains in self-reported AI-tool confidence and classroom application, with satisfaction above 90%. Organisers report that other provinces have since requested the same model.
Evidence to date is observational -- NGO/ministry-reported participation figures and pre/post self-assessment -- rather than an independently audited evaluation of teaching practice or student learning outcomes, and roughly 20% of the province's teachers were not surveyed for the pre/post results.
