Context

Technopark Zürich is a science and technology park in Zürich-West, on a former Sulzer-Escher Wyss industrial site, founded in December 1988 and opened in March 1993 with joint financing from Sulzer-Escher Wyss, Zürcher Kantonalbank, Swiss Life and Winterthur Versicherung.

Objectives

To co-locate ETH Zurich spin-offs with established technology and service firms and research institutes, encouraging knowledge exchange and helping convert academic research into marketable products.

Activities

Rather than running a formal licensing office, Technopark provides lab, office and workshop space plus coaching and counselling for founders, and deliberately mixes spin-offs, other start-ups, research institutes and established firms on one site; partner institutions include ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, ZHAW and EMPA.

Results

The site currently hosts roughly 260 companies and 2,800 employees across 47,000 square metres. At its 2013 20th-anniversary review it reported 285 resident firms, including 58 ETH Zurich spin-offs, more than 1,800 jobs, and a 93% survival rate among all start-ups ever hosted, though these figures are self-reported and have not been independently audited.

Conclusions

Technopark shows a long-running, financially stable science-park model with a genuine concentration of ETH spin-offs, but its impact figures rest on its own reporting rather than an independently audited study, and a separately cited 93% survival rate from a 2020 ETH study of spin-offs generally is a related but distinct claim.
