Context
Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM), the largest private university in Latin America, has systematically integrated AI-adaptive learning and assessment tools into undergraduate courses across 33 campuses through its Institute for the Future of Education (IFE).
Objectives
The initiative aims to improve student learning outcomes and assessment/feedback through AI-adaptive tools, and to support faculty in developing course materials and assessments.
Activities
CogBooks adaptive learning was deployed in the Statistical Methods for Decision Making course across approximately 50 course sections over three years, evaluated in a peer-reviewed study. A second study applied an adaptive learning strategy across four STEM courses (Computational Thinking, Physics I, Physics II, and Mathematical Modeling) using a quasi-experimental design. Adaptive Leveling Modules and a Law AInterview AI agent were also deployed, alongside TECgpt's Skill Studio for faculty (launched October 2024) and the Academic TECbot. In January 2025 Tec launched AIGEN, sharing the platform with 10 partner universities in 10 countries including UNAM, and open-sourced TECgpt for all Mexican universities in June 2025.
Results
The CogBooks study found the experimental adaptive group achieved nearly 15% more students scoring above 90 on midterm and final exams compared to the control group, in both online and face-to-face modalities. The second, quasi-experimental study found significant performance advantages in Computational Thinking. IFE's 2025 Educational Innovation Report documents Adaptive Leveling Modules reaching 10,350 first-year students with average score improvements of 20-48 points, and the Law AInterview agent showing 47-80% improvement in legal case-interview skills. Skill Studio has been adopted by over 1,000 professors, and the Academic TECbot has served 81,000 users.
Conclusions
The peer-reviewed CogBooks and STEM-course studies provide the strongest evidence of learning impact; the broader ecosystem figures (Adaptive Leveling Modules, Law AInterview, faculty and user adoption) rest on Tec's own institutional reporting rather than independent evaluation.
