The Innovation Hub — Tshwane Science and Technology Park

The Innovation Hub, operated by the Innovation Hub Management Company (TIHMC) as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA), has been South Africa’s flagship knowledge-economy anchor since 2001. It holds the distinction of being Africa’s first science and technology park to receive full membership of the International Association of Science Parks (IASP).

The hub runs five complementary programmes. The Maxum Business Incubator offers pre-incubation (6–12 months) and a 2–3-year full incubation track for knowledge-intensive enterprises in ICT and advanced manufacturing. The BioPark Incubator specialises in bioeconomy, agro-processing and pharmaceuticals, having supported over 100 companies cumulatively. The Climate Innovation Centre targets green-economy startups in water, waste and renewables. The eKasiLabs programme embeds micro-innovation hubs in five township economic corridors across Gauteng, bringing incubation directly to marginalised communities. The Product Development Lab (PDL) moves solutions from proof-of-concept to market-ready products.

In FY2023/24 the hub created 389 direct jobs from incubated companies, produced 64 product-ready innovations taken to market, facilitated exports exceeding R294 million, and filed 67 intellectual property applications. One portfolio company, energy fintech Wetility, raised R903 million in debt and equity. The annual GATE Innovation Competition has run for 15 consecutive years, catalysing township entrepreneurship across Gauteng’s five corridors. The hub also operates a 76-hectare moringa plantation through three cooperatives, creating an additional 114 rural livelihoods.
