Context

Nicaragua joined UNICEF's Accessible Digital Textbooks (ADT) initiative in 2023, piloting the AI-enabled conversion toolset with the Ministry of Education in three schools in Managua.

Activities

Teachers built two ADT prototypes — one for mathematics and one for environmental studies — converting standard textbooks into accessible digital formats with text-to-speech, image descriptions and sign-language video, used in early-grade, mixed-ability classrooms.
