In June 2023 HKU's Senate named GenAI a "fifth literacy" and gave every student and staff member free ChatGPT-class access. Rather than deploy AI detectors, which risk false accusations, HKU pushed teachers toward oral exams, presentations and AI-critique tasks.
The University of Hong Kong's Senate endorsed a Generative AI policy in June 2023 naming GenAI a "fifth literacy" and giving all students and staff free Azure OpenAI (ChatGPT-class) access from September 2023, funded by HK$15.7 million from the UGC's FITE fund; rather than deploy AI detectors, HKU pushed teachers toward oral exams, presentations and AI-critique tasks.
In the general HKU chatbot's first 20 days, about 10% of HKU's 36,400 students (3,640) and 17% of its 13,100 staff (2,227) used it; a separate IT helpdesk chatbot logged 1,276 inquiries; access was extended to eight Hong Kong universities.
