University of Leicester Gives Every Student and Staff Member Microsoft 365 Copilot Access — A UK 'Frontier University' AI Rollout

The University of Leicester announced in June 2026 that it would give its entire community — more than 21,000 students and over 4,000 staff — full access to Microsoft 365 Copilot from September 2026, describing itself as one of the first UK universities to provide institution-wide AI tool access and as one of the first designated 'Microsoft Frontier universities', embedding Copilot across teaching, learning, research and professional services. Leicester pairs Copilot access with 100 hours of employer-informed, work-related learning already embedded in every undergraduate degree, framing the move as preparation for workplaces where AI tools are already standard. Leicester's Vice-Chancellor said 'AI is already transforming the way we teach, learn, research and engage... it's vital that we become early adopters' in order to 'future-proof our University and our people,' while Microsoft's Education Director said the deployment reflects that 'AI is reshaping the world of work students are stepping into.'

The rollout follows the University of Manchester's January 2026 announcement of a similar Microsoft 365 Copilot deployment for its entire 65,000-strong student and staff community, due for completion by summer 2026 — suggesting full institutional Copilot rollouts are becoming a recognisable pattern among large UK universities rather than an isolated pilot.
