Since 2004, UNAM's Chinampa Refugio Project has worked with Xochimilco farmers to rehabilitate canal-farming plots recharged partly by treated wastewater, building axolotl refuges — even as surveys record a ~98% collapse of the wild axolotl population between 1998 and 2008.
Xochimilco's chinampas are raised farming beds built up from canal mud and vegetation, a system dating to before the Aztec era that survives today largely because treated municipal wastewater — discharged from multiple treatment plants into a roughly 207-kilometre canal network, according to a peer-reviewed NIH-indexed study — helps keep the canals filled as the original lake that once fed them has been almost entirely drained by Mexico City's growth. The area holds UNESCO World Heritage status (1987) and FAO Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) recognition (2017/2018).
Since 2004, the Laboratorio de Restauración Ecológica at UNAM, led by Luis Zambrano, has run the Chinampa Refugio Project with local chinamperos (farmers), rehabilitating chinampas and building predator-exclusion refuges and biofilters intended to support the critically endangered wild axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). As of recent reporting the project has rehabilitated around 40 chinampas and 36 refuges, reaching roughly 228 direct and 912 indirect farming-family beneficiaries, funded substantially through UNAM's donation-based AdoptAxolotl campaign rather than a formal government payment scheme.
The ecological case for urgency is stark and well documented: peer-reviewed surveys (Zambrano et al., Biological Conservation) recorded axolotl density collapsing from 6,000 individuals per km² in 1998 to just 100 per km² in 2008, with the last full census in 2014 finding fewer than 35 per km². Only around 17% of Xochimilco's more than 20,000 chinampas remain actively cultivated, and water pollution and urban encroachment continue to pressure the system — meaning restoration efforts, while real, are responding to a still-unresolved ecological crisis rather than a completed recovery.
