What works in Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands, a remote Pacific atoll nation of approximately 40,000 residents spread across 24 atolls, is implementing multiple development and protection initiatives. Digital RMI is investing US$37.5 million to build climate-resilient internet and digital-government infrastructure prioritising e-health and e-education, though quantified adoption outcomes remain unpublished during its ongoing seven-year implementation (2021-2028). Weto in Mour operates the nation's first dedicated gender-based-violence support centre, with current intake of 2-3 clients monthly representing only a fraction of estimated need, given that roughly one in three Marshallese women are estimated to experience abuse in their lifetime. Reimaanlok Community-Led Marine Protection designated a 48,000 km² fully protected marine sanctuary around Bikar and Bokak atolls in January 2025, based on surveys documenting the region's highest recorded coral cover and reef-fish biomass, though socio-economic outcome data has not yet been published.
