Context

On 25 August 2025, Bahrain's Ministry of Interior (General Directorate of Traffic) signed an agreement with Beyon Solutions, part of the majority state-owned Beyon Group, to deploy 500 AI-powered 'smart' traffic cameras. The cameras use computer vision to automatically detect violations — mobile-phone use, seatbelt non-compliance, speeding, red-light running, illegal lane use and window tinting — without human intervention, including through windscreens via infrared sensors in low light. The first phase went live on 1 February 2026, with further expansion planned through September 2026 and October 2027.

Results

Bahraini press confirmed the system had 'already recorded a number of traffic violations' shortly after activation, but no source found discloses actual violation counts, resulting fine revenue, or any accident-reduction rate, and neither party has published a contract cost figure. On 1 July 2026, the same vendor and camera model were extended to a second use case: the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs announced AI-connected cameras to monitor littering and vandalism at roughly 200 public sites, explicitly citing the traffic system's 'success' as precedent — again without releasing quantified results.
