Context
A Grid is a startup hub on Aalto University's Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland, at the centre of the Espoo Innovation Garden, a four-square-kilometre innovation district. It brings together a community of startups and partners, anchored by the Aalto Startup Center, the European Space Agency's Business Incubation Centre, United Nations Technology Innovation Labs, and the City of Espoo's business services.
Results
The Espoo Innovation Garden district hosts around 5,000 researchers, 25 R&D units and 16,000 students, and spins out at least one startup a week. A Grid itself gathers a community of 150+ startups and partners, spanning fields from 3D printing and AI to medical and food-waste ventures, and has attracted corporates such as DENSO to co-locate R&D.
