Description

TAKEOFF is the University of Malta's business incubator, based at the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Business Incubation (CEBI) in Msida. Since 2014 it has run the TAKEOFF Seed Fund Award (TOSFA) jointly with Malta's Ministry for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, the Malta Digital Innovation Authority and the Malta University Holding Company, offering equity-free grants of €2,500 to €25,000 to help student and researcher ventures move from concept to commercialisation.

The scheme runs annual or near-annual rounds: in 2023 it distributed €100,000 across winning proposals, and in October 2024 it awarded €150,000 to eight projects — six start-ups and two research proof-of-concept teams — in a ceremony attended by the University Rector, the Minister for the Economy and the head of the Malta Digital Innovation Authority. Past awardees include craft-beer producer Huskie, wedding-services aggregator Get Hitched and meal-plan provider Fortify; the incubator's broader TAKEOFF ecosystem also produced UMNAI, a neuro-symbolic AI deep-tech company founded in 2019.

As Malta's only university-based, multi-agency seed fund, TOSFA fills a real early-stage financing gap for a small island economy, but its absolute scale is necessarily modest — a handful of projects per round — and no independent, longitudinal survival-rate study of TOSFA-funded ventures was found; the evidence here rests on disbursement figures and named outcomes rather than a formal evaluation.
