Context

Researchers at Palestine Technical University Kadoorie in Tulkarm and Hebron University developed a professional-development programme to address a documented AI-literacy gap among pre-service teachers preparing to enter West Bank classrooms.

Objectives

The team aimed to build and validate a dedicated AI-literacy scale and use it to test whether a professional-development programme improves pre-service teachers' AI literacy, and whether gains differ by gender or specialty.

Activities

After validating the AI-literacy scale, the team ran a one-group pretest-posttest design with 37 undergraduate pre-service teachers from both universities, measuring literacy before and after training.

Results

AI-literacy scores rose significantly after the programme, with no significant difference in the size of the gain by gender or specialty area.

Conclusions

The study demonstrates a validated measurement tool and a promising training design, but the absence of a control group and the small, single-cohort sample limit causal attribution and generalisation beyond these two institutions.

Conditions for success

  • a validated, purpose-built AI-literacy measurement scale
  • grounding in an instructional-design framework

Common failure modes

  • no control group, so attribution to the programme rather than general improvement cannot be confirmed
  • single-cohort sample (n=37) limits generalisation beyond the two institutions
