Context

Paraguay has taken part in UNICEF's global Accessible Digital Textbooks initiative since 2018, alongside eight other countries.

Activities

Paraguay's Ministry of Education, UNICEF and NGO Paraguay Educa adapted first- and second-grade communication workbooks into accessible digital formats — audio narration, integrated sign-language video, simplified language — publishing them on the 'Paraguay Aprende' platform.

Results

The first national rollout reached 19 schools in 2023. Globally, the initiative has produced 66 prototypes, reached over 2,500 students since 2016, trained more than 1,600 ministry staff and teachers across six Latin American and Caribbean countries, and won the Zero Project Award 2024.

Conclusions

Published figures describe deployment and training scale rather than an independent, peer-reviewed evaluation of learning outcomes; no study yet published measures learning gains for disabled versus non-disabled students using the accessible textbooks specifically in Paraguay.
