Greece's 'AI in Schools' deploys ChatGPT Edu in 20 secondary schools via a government–OpenAI–Onassis Foundation partnership. Teachers trained Oct–Nov 2025; students from Mar 2026. Full DPIA conducted; PM's Office and Ministry jointly oversee. Evaluation due Summer 2026.
Under Greece's Blueprint for AI Transformation, announced in November 2024 by the Special Secretariat of Foresight under the Prime Minister's Office, the Hellenic Republic, OpenAI and the Onassis Foundation launched 'AI in Schools', deploying ChatGPT Edu -- the GDPR-compliant education version of ChatGPT -- in 20 secondary schools (14 model and experimental public schools and six Onassis Foundation public schools).
The programme follows a four-phase rollout: teacher training co-designed by OpenAI and local partners (including The Tipping Point) ran October-November 2025, covering responsible AI use, pedagogical integration and classroom safety; student-facing deployment began December 2025; structured student participation expanded from March 2026; full curriculum integration is targeted for the 2026/27 academic year. Oversight is provided by a joint task force of the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Education, and the Onassis Foundation, and a Data Protection Impact Assessment was completed before launch.
As of the pilot's current phase, teacher training has been completed and student-facing use has begun; independent evaluation of teaching quality and student learning outcomes is planned for Summer 2026 but had not been published as of this record. The pilot sits alongside 13 regional Innovation Centres beginning operations in 2025/26 and is co-funded through Greece 2.0, the national Recovery and Resilience Plan.
