England's Department for Education and the Incubator for AI selected up to 8 edtech/AI firms, backed by £300,000 each, to co-design AI tutoring tools with schools — aiming to reach 450,000 disadvantaged pupils a year while meeting new government AI safety standards.
In April 2026, England's Department for Education (DfE) and the government's Incubator for AI (i.AI) launched the AI Tutoring Tools Pioneers Programme, inviting edtech and AI companies to bid for a place in a Pioneer Group of up to eight organisations, each receiving £300,000 to co-design AI tutoring tools with partner schools during the 2026 summer term.
The programme targets pupils eligible for free school meals, aiming to reach up to 450,000 disadvantaged pupils a year with curriculum-aligned, one-to-one AI tutoring once tools move into wider use in schools from 2027, in response to a GCSE attainment gap where around 25% of disadvantaged pupils reach grade 5+ in English and Maths versus over 50% of their peers.
Every tool must meet DfE's Generative AI Product Safety Standards, and pupil work cannot be used to train AI models without parental permission; tools are co-designed with teachers and tested in partner schools before any wider rollout.
At this stage the programme is a funded co-design and classroom-trial exercise rather than an evaluated intervention: no pupil outcome data yet exists, and the government's own Sovereign Benchmark for measuring AI-tutor effectiveness is still under development.
