ASU's AI Innovation Challenge has activated 500+ faculty and staff projects with OpenAI; since Oct 2025 ChatGPT Edu is free to all ASU students and staff under a privacy-protecting enterprise agreement. Learning outcomes are not yet published.
Arizona State University was the first university to collaborate with OpenAI (January 2024) and launched an AI Innovation Challenge inviting faculty and staff to propose uses of ChatGPT; over 500 projects have been activated, from a language-learning study buddy to an AI patient for behavioural-health practice. From 1 October 2025 ChatGPT Edu (GPT-5) is available at no individual cost to all ASU students, faculty, researchers and staff, alongside Google Gemini for Education, Microsoft Copilot Chat and ASU's in-house CreateAI toolkit. An enterprise agreement keeps conversations and files out of OpenAI model training. Evidence is descriptive: project counts and access figures are reported by ASU, with no published measurement of learning outcomes, and dependence on a single vendor is a risk.
