Description

Banglalink, Bangladesh's third-largest mobile operator, partnered with the GSMA's Mobile Internet Skills Training Toolkit (MISTT) programme to tackle low mobile-internet adoption among its subscribers.
Banglalink trained 3,200 of its retail sales agents (BSSPs) as trainers using the free, multilingual MISTT modules, which cover using WhatsApp, Google and Facebook, tracking data consumption, and using the internet safely. Agents then delivered short, in-person coaching sessions to customers in stores over a three-month pilot.
GSMA's pilot evaluation found the programme reached 117,000 customers. Among trained users, mobile-internet use rose 228% and Banglalink's network-wide data use grew 59% over the same period; 19% of previously non-data customers became regular data users and 15% of occasional users became regular users. Results were published by GSMA and covered by Bangladeshi press in July 2019.
As a self-reported, single-operator pilot without a control group, the before/after comparison cannot fully rule out concurrent market growth in smartphone adoption, and no public evidence was found of the pilot being extended beyond its three-month run at Banglalink. GSMA has since published the toolkit and case study openly so other operators can replicate and independently test the approach.
