Context

Barcelona's "superblocks" (superilles) model groups clusters of existing city blocks — typically a 3x3 grid — and reroutes through-traffic around their perimeter, freeing interior streets for pedestrians, cyclists, and green infrastructure such as trees, benches and permeable surfaces.

Activities

Piloted in the Poblenou district from 2016 and later extended to other neighbourhoods (including Sant Antoni and Horta), the model is a central plank of Barcelona's Urban Mobility Plan, implemented and funded by the city council. In a 2019 peer-reviewed study published in Environment International, researchers from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), the Barcelona Public Health Agency (ASPB) and BCNecologia modelled the health impact of scaling the original superblock design to the full 503-superblock plan across the city.

Results

Using a health-impact-assessment methodology combining measured exposure-response relationships for five factors, they estimated the full rollout could prevent 667 premature deaths per year (291 from lower NO2 air pollution, 163 from reduced traffic noise, 117 from heat mitigation, and the remainder from more green space and physical activity), increase average life expectancy by nearly 200 days per resident, and generate roughly €1.7 billion in annual economic savings. Modelled environmental changes included a 24% reduction in NO2 (47 to 36 µg/m³) and a shift of an estimated 230,000 of 1.19 million weekday car trips to walking, cycling or public transport.

Conclusions

These figures are model estimates for the full, city-wide 503-superblock scenario, not yet a measured outcome of current implementation, which as of the mid-2020s covers a smaller number of neighbourhoods amid ongoing political and local-business friction over some rollouts. The study itself notes it lacked sufficient city-wide data to fully quantify green-space health benefits, estimating them only for the Eixample district (60 of the 667 modelled deaths prevented). The programme's evidence base for ecosystem-service outcomes such as carbon, biodiversity or soil/water retention is limited — its strongest, most rigorously evidenced benefits are in public health and air quality rather than the ecological dimensions this catalogue emphasises.
