Context

In 2018, BBVA Spain launched 'BBVA for Everyone', an app letting visually impaired customers arrange cash withdrawals remotely and navigate by GPS to the nearest of 6,300+ ATMs, authenticating by PIN on arrival; it was developed over a year with Ilunion Tecnología y Accesibilidad and tested with a pilot group of more than 50 people with disabilities before launch.

Objectives

Building on that model, BBVA Perú set out to become the first bank within the BBVA Group in Latin America to offer an accessible app for blind customers, targeting the approximately 800,000 Peruvians (2.64% of the population) who hold a permanent visual-disability certificate.

Activities

Reported in May 2023, the Peruvian version lets users register, check balances and transaction history, pay credit cards (BBVA or other banks), and use interoperable digital-wallet transfers via Plin.

Results

As of publication, neither BBVA nor independent Peruvian banking press had released user-adoption figures, satisfaction data or an independent accessibility audit for the Peru rollout.

Conclusions

The record consists of company statements and trade-press coverage describing the feature set, not a measured evaluation of reach or impact.

Implementation

Indicative cost
Medium (€50k–€500k) — Peru's rollout adapts an accessibility feature set and design process already built and validated in Spain, likely lowering incremental development cost relative to building from scratch.
Time to results
Medium (1–3 years) — The originating Spain app was developed over about a year, culminating in a 2018 launch; the Peru version was reported live in May 2023, roughly five years after the Spain original.
Staffing & skills
BBVA Perú (bank), Ilunion Tecnología y Accesibilidad (Spain co-design partner for the original app)

Conditions for success

  • Reusing a design and feature model already tested and launched in Spain (BBVA for Everyone)
  • The original Spain app was built over a year with accessibility specialist Ilunion and tested with a 50+ person disability pilot group
  • Interoperability with the national Plin digital-wallet network in Peru

Common failure modes

  • No independent accessibility audit published for the Peru rollout
  • No user-adoption or satisfaction figures disclosed since the May 2023 launch
