Berytech — Lebanon's University-Born Tech-Transfer and Innovation Ecosystem

Berytech was established in 2002 by Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ), physically located next to the university's Faculty of Engineering in Beirut, to bridge academic research and Lebanon's private sector. It became the first organisation in the Middle East to be accredited as a Business Innovation Centre (BIC) by the European Business and Innovation Centre Network (EBN), and now operates three sites in and around Beirut: Berytech Mathaf, Berytech Mar Roukoz and Berytech BDD.
By its 20th anniversary in December 2022, Berytech reported having assisted more than 5,000 entrepreneurs, supported roughly 700 startups and 1,000 SMEs, and helped create more than 6,200 jobs since its founding. Its dedicated grant programmes, such as the two-year Impact Rise initiative, disbursed over $70,000 in grants to 16 selected startups, of which seven graduated with more than 100 direct and indirect jobs created.
Berytech's growth occurred despite, and partly in response to, Lebanon's severe 2019–2023 financial and currency crisis; the organisation frames its post-2019 programming as deliberately geared toward crisis resilience, but independent, audited figures on its overall economic return — such as aggregate company survival rates or total revenue generated — are not published outside its own impact reporting.
