CARNET's ESF+-funded BrAIn project piloted Croatia's first AI curriculum in VET schools, covering responsible AI use, plagiarism and authorship crediting; 68 teachers and 1,018 students across 53 schools took part, with over 90% of teachers planning to continue in 2025/26.
BrAIn (“Application of Artificial Intelligence-Based Digital Technologies in Education”) is a EUR 15.99 million project (85% European Social Fund Plus, 15% Croatian state co-financing) running September 2023 to September 2029, led by the Croatian Academic and Research Network (CARNET) under the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth, with the Agency for VET and Adult Education, the Croatian Catholic University and the Croatian Association for Artificial Intelligence (CroAI) as partners.
The project's first curriculum — covering responsible AI tool use, digital content creation, and identifying safety threats, cyberbullying, plagiarism, authorship crediting and effects on emotional well-being — was piloted in the 2024/2025 school year and completed in June 2025, reaching 68 teachers and 1,018 students across 53 VET schools.
A student survey of 135 respondents from 16 VET schools (April 2025) highlighted hands-on AI skills, a relaxed learning environment, teacher engagement and ethical discussion as the most valued elements. In a teacher survey, roughly three-quarters reported high or exceptional student interest, and over 90% said they intended to continue the curriculum in 2025/2026; results fed into a curriculum revision for the following year. A conference in April 2025 attracted over 800 teachers, principals and researchers to disseminate early findings nationally.
