Description

Brunei Darussalam's Ministry of Education, through its Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre, has built a national framework for the ethical use of generative AI in schools. In 2025 it launched the GenAI Guidance for Education – Handbook Edition at the country's 35th National Teachers' Day Celebration, alongside a dedicated 'AI Guidance for Schools Toolkit' workshop for educators held at Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri.

The guidance adapts the seven principles for ethical AI in education recommended by the international TeachAI initiative to Brunei's own curriculum, Islamic values and data-protection expectations, covering disclosure of AI use, protection of student data, academic-integrity safeguards and educator accountability for AI-generated content.

The initiative sits within Brunei's wider Digital Economy Masterplan 2025 push and was reported by both the Ministry's own channels and the independent Borneo Bulletin newspaper. It is a governance and capacity-building measure rather than a classroom intervention, so no student learning-outcome data exists; its evidence base is the workshop's occurrence and the handbook's publication, not measured effects on teaching or learning.
