Description

capito, based in Graz, rewrites texts from public bodies, companies and NGOs into up to three language levels (CEFR A1, A2, B1), offered side by side so readers choose their own level. Translated texts and layouts are checked by representatives of the target groups in a standardised test and, if passed, receive a 'Leicht Lesen' quality seal. It also runs training and the capito.ai writing assistant.
The problem it addresses is documented in its 2025 impact report, citing Statistik Austria's PIAAC 2022/23: 60.9% of adults in Austria read below OECD level 3, the minimum the OECD considers necessary for effective communication with authorities, while the report states that the largest share of public information is written at levels 3–5.
Evidence caveat: the available outcome statements come from capito's own impact report and certification documents (small panels of target-group testers). The German Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) notes that easy language is criticised for insufficient linguistic grounding and commercialisation, and its article cites no empirical outcome studies. No independent evaluation of comprehension gains was found.
Useful as a transferable method (multi-level text with user testing) but with unproven impact.
