Chalmers Ventures (Chalmers University's tech-transfer arm, est. 2015) was ranked a top-10 global university incubator by UBI Global in 2019; its city-co-owned Johanneberg Science Park (est. 2009) hosts hundreds of startups, including the HSB Living Lab.
SE23Chalmers Ventures AB, Chalmers University of Technology's wholly owned venture-creation and investment arm, was formed in 2015 through the merger of Chalmers Innovation (running since 1999) and Encubator (from the Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship, founded 1997). Chalmers University has provided about SEK 300 million of investment capital to the venture-creation activity over a 10-year period.
Adjacent Johanneberg Science Park, established December 2009 by the Chalmers University of Technology Foundation and the City of Gothenburg and now co-owned by partners including Volvo, Volvo Cars, Skanska and Riksbyggen, hosts hundreds of knowledge- and technology-intensive companies, with flagship projects including the HSB Living Lab and the ElectriCity electric-bus route.
In November 2019 UBI Global's World Benchmark Study ranked Chalmers Ventures the top university business incubator in the Nordics and in the global top 10. Vinnova funded Chalmers Ventures SEK 29,025,000 for an 'Excellent Incubators' programme (July 2020-June 2025), under which about 130 projects and 56 companies received business support. Spin-out LumenRadio listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market in December 2022 at an implied market value of roughly SEK 544-594 million. The Nordic Investment Bank approved a SEK 42 million loan in 2014 for an 8,000 sq m Johanneberg expansion.
The most granular startup-count and turnover figures available (2,700 ideas evaluated, 130+ companies launched, SEK 558 million combined turnover, 406 jobs) describe the 1999-2011 track record of predecessor Chalmers Innovation rather than the current entity, and no equally detailed current aggregate portfolio figures could be independently verified; sources also disagree on Johanneberg's exact founding year.
