Context

Stadtschulen Zug (the City of Zug's public schools, Switzerland) ran a pilot on classroom use of AI from October 2023 to July 2024, developed jointly with Pädagogische Hochschule Luzern and Pädagogische Hochschule Zug.

Objectives

A participatory process brought school leaders and teachers into workshops to co-author a strategic guideline for classroom AI, reduced to four principles: competence (Kompetenz), safety (Sicherheit), balance (Balance) and integrity (Integrität).

Activities

The pilot built a teaching unit around a purpose-built platform, 'Classbot', letting pupils from grade 5 upward interact with AI chatbots inside a teacher-defined, controlled environment rather than open consumer tools. Teachers implemented the unit themselves during the spring 2024 semester, with an accompanying research partnership (Begleitforschung) collecting data on its use in Nature & Technology / MINT lessons.

Results

In October 2024, city rector Remo Krummenacher described the results as a positive first assessment, saying AI has the potential to transform teaching and learning. Neither the city nor PH Luzern has published quantitative outcome data, participant counts, or comparisons with non-participating classes.

Conclusions

The pilot remained confined to Stadtschulen Zug's own schools over its ten-month run, with no announced expansion beyond the city.

Implementation

Indicative cost
Low (< €50k) — Small-scale municipal pilot run jointly with two teacher-training colleges; no budget figures were published.
Time to results
Medium (1–3 years) — Ten-month pilot, October 2023 to July 2024, spanning a co-design phase and one teaching semester (spring 2024) of classroom implementation.
Staffing & skills
School leaders and teachers, who co-authored the guiding principles through workshops, Pädagogische Hochschule Luzern and Pädagogische Hochschule Zug (joint development and accompanying research/Begleitforschung)

Conditions for success

  • Participatory co-design of guiding principles with school leaders and teachers before classroom rollout
  • A teacher-controlled platform (Classbot) rather than open consumer AI tools
  • An accompanying research partnership (Begleitforschung) to collect usage data during the pilot

Common failure modes

  • No published quantitative data limits any external assessment of actual impact
  • Pilot remained confined to a single city's schools with no announced expansion after ten months
