Context

Interventions supporting intercultural competencies connecting refugees with host-community peers were identified as largely absent from Greece's refugee response; young refugees face uncertainty and risk of losing hope. Code+Create (2017-2019) was designed and implemented by FCA and GFOSS - Open Technologies Alliance, with IOCC, in urban Athens.

Objectives

Provide refugee youth outside school or without access to other education with a foundation in digital and tech skills; create a shared space for refugee and Greek youth to interact and work together on digital projects; foster an inspiring environment for learning, connecting and problem-solving.

Activities

Set up two open technology labs (equipped with Linux laptops, 3D printers, interactive projectors, Arduino robotics kits and Raspberry Pis) delivering free courses to mixed classes of refugee and Greek youth over an 8-week programme, with 3-hour classes held 2-3 times a week, each run by two instructors and a facilitator, using openly licensed instructional material hosted on a Moodle learning management system (available at elearn.ellak.gr).

Conclusions

No formal evaluation was conducted; open educational material was made freely available for reuse.
