Canada's longest-running major innovation hub (est. 1997), operating a 120,000 sq ft campus in Waterloo with deep University of Waterloo ties — 1,400+ tech companies supported, C$38M federal ElevateIP programme, and Waterloo Region ranked the world's 2nd-highest startup density.
Communitech was established in 1997 as a public-private not-for-profit organisation in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, with a founding mission to connect the people, companies and ideas that power innovation in what would become one of the world's most concentrated technology corridors. It operates a 120,000 sq ft innovation campus in Waterloo's tech quarter, and maintains strong institutional ties with the University of Waterloo (ranked globally for computer science and engineering) and Wilfrid Laurier University.
Since its founding, Communitech has supported more than 1,400 technology companies — from startups to scale-ups and multinationals — providing mentorship, talent acquisition support, market intelligence and co-working space. Waterloo Region is consistently cited as having one of the world's highest startup densities. The Waterloo tech ecosystem has produced global companies including BlackBerry (formerly Research In Motion), OpenText, Kik and D2L.
In 2022, Communitech was selected to lead the federal government's ElevateIP programme with C$38 million in funding to help startups across Canada develop and protect intellectual property. Communitech is also a delivery partner for Scale AI and other national innovation programmes, extending its reach well beyond the Waterloo region.
Honest limitations: Communitech does not publish audited data on revenue generated or jobs created by supported companies. The Waterloo ecosystem's success is partly attributable to its unique constellation of UW, the co-op programme and proximity to Toronto and US markets — conditions that are not easily transferable. The hub's talent retention function is contested: many Waterloo graduates ultimately migrate to Toronto or the United States.
