A Kitchener-Waterloo innovation hub founded in 1997 that channels University of Waterloo research and Velocity-incubated IP into industry, now serving 1,164+ member companies that have raised CAD $400.78 million.
Communitech is a public-private innovation hub founded in 1997 by local tech entrepreneurs in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, based in the historic Tannery building (~110,000 sq ft). It is not a university department but works closely with the University of Waterloo's Velocity startup incubator, Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College.
It runs founder and scale-up support programmes covering financing access, talent, peer groups, market access, and AI-adoption training, connecting regional research-derived IP and talent with industry and investors.
Per Communitech's own FY26 reporting, it counts 1,164 member companies that have collectively raised CAD $400.78 million in capital, hosted 104 events, run 23 peer groups, and delivered 916 'AI Adoption Hours,' in a region with 39,400+ tech workers. In November 2024 the federal government committed a further CAD $47.5 million to the joint 'Scale-Up Platform' (shared with Invest Ottawa and MaRS Discovery District), down from the original CAD $52.4 million pledged in 2019.
The hub shows real fragility to public-funding shifts: a 30% provincial funding cut in 2019 forced Communitech to lay off 14% of its 105-person staff, and a further ~10% of staff were cut in November 2022 amid the broader tech downturn. Membership and capital-raised figures are self-reported by Communitech and not independently audited.
