CompiSternli ("computer starlets“) is an intergenerational project from Switzerland that connects two generations: young children and elderly people. Both sides can profit from interactions with each other. On one hand the elderly people get to enhance their media literacy skills
The initiative responds to a digital-competence gap between generations: the ease with which young people use modern technology contrasts with older people's more limited, less technology-oriented experience. CompiSternli was designed to bring the two together so each can benefit from the other.
Enhance elderly participants' media-literacy skills using tablet computers, while enhancing participating children's social and explanatory skills as they coach the elderly; help older people understand what tablets and the internet can do for them.
Children, usually from gifted-student classes, are first coached to answer key questions (what elderly people might use tablets for, how to explain the internet clearly, which applications suit older users' interests, and how to adapt explanations for hearing or sight limitations) before the project is launched and run cooperatively with the CompiSternli project group and a team member who accompanies participating teachers and schools until the project ends. Participation is free of charge.
The project is presented as a low-resource method for addressing digital literacy among the elderly while also bridging generational gaps, and as a potential model for similarly structured digital-skills disparities between other social groups.
