South Korea's original Special R&D Zone, formally designated in 2005 around KAIST, ETRI and other public institutes in Daejeon. Its 2022 survey counted 2,454 resident institutions, 91,000+ workers and 2,015 technology-transfer cases from public research into industry.
Daedeok Innopolis is a government-designated Special Research and Development Zone in the Yuseong district of Daejeon, South Korea. Its roots trace to a 1973 plan for a 'Daedeok Research Academy City'; it was formally designated an 'Innopolis' special zone in July 2005 and marked its 50th anniversary in 2023. It is managed by the Korea Innovation Foundation, a public body established under Korea's Special Act on the Promotion of Special Research and Development Zones.

In June 2026, the Foundation's chairman told an OECD innovation-policy forum in Paris that four of the ten largest companies by market capitalisation on Korea's KOSDAQ exchange are based in the Daedeok zone.
Some cited achievement figures — including counts of new research-based spin-off companies, technology-transfer deals and jobs for 2021-2023 — are reported at the level of Korea's five INNOPOLIS zones combined (Daedeok, Gwangju, Daegu, Busan and Jeonbuk), not Daedeok alone, and should not be read as Daedeok-specific. Core statistics also rely on a single government survey reprinted across recent years rather than continuous independent audit.
