Context

From mid-2025, Deakin University began delivering an 'Emerging Technologies' microcredential stream aimed at ICT professionals moving into AI-related roles, as part of Round 2 of the Australian Government's Microcredentials Pilot in Higher Education.

Objectives

To lower the cost and time barrier for ICT professionals to upskill in AI and emerging technologies, and to provide a credit pathway into further study at Deakin.

Activities

Learners bundle four short courses (50-75 hours each, completable in six weeks to six months); 60 government-subsidised domestic places let learners complete the bundle for AUD 800 instead of AUD 4,400, with FEE-HELP available and two academic credit points awarded on completion. The stream sits within a national pilot: Round 1 (announced June 2023) funded 18 providers to design 28 courses, and Round 2 (announced August 2024) funded 25 providers, including Deakin, to deliver 48 further courses.

Results

The pilot committed AUD 18.5 million overall (AUD 2m for design, AUD 16.5m for delivery to up to 4,000 students), but the Government's own independent evaluation of impact on skills shortages, equity and further-study pathways was not due to start until late 2025 and complete by mid-2026, so no outcome data exists yet — only enrolment capacity and pricing are documented.
