Description

Between 2020 and 2022 an investment fund set up by the Danish government, Local Government Denmark (KL) and Danish Regions financed 40 'signature projects' to gain hands-on experience with AI in welfare services, climate and public administration, in the state, municipalities and regions.
The Agency for Digital Government published an evaluation in November 2024, carried out with Deloitte. It found that about 15% of the projects (6 of 40) had produced solutions in operation and 45% (18) were still under way, and that the projects that reached operation delivered concrete gains. The agency's summary reports that 82% of projects improved skills in their organisation, while 79% met data challenges (quality, volume) and 68% regulatory challenges, including uncertainty about GDPR compliance.
Caution: most projects had not reached operation by the time of evaluation, and the full report is available only in Danish. The value of the practice lies in the published, candid lessons that now feed Denmark's Digital Taskforce.
