Context

DigiPippi is a Danish voluntary association working to close the gender gap in IT, technology and digitisation by creating a digital and social community for girls aged 7-13, a demographic that rarely identifies with technology. It aims to give all girls, regardless of ethnic, economic or social background, free access to learn and play with technology.

Objectives

The association's aim is to connect young girls with female volunteer role models to break down stereotypes and demonstrate real-world applications of technology, delivered through events, workshops and clubs that make visible to young people that IT and technology are also for girls.

Activities

With support from CanopyLAB, DigiPippi built an online academy where volunteer role models complete training courses on the organisation's mission and values and on how to host IT and Youtuber-style workshops for girls and use social media to reach a wider audience; the girls themselves are also brought together on one platform where they can connect socially with their mentors online. Other stakeholders involved include K&W, PwC, Kold Partners and Teknologipagten.

Conclusions

DigiPippi explicitly reports that it has not been evaluated. A key operational lesson was that its earlier volunteer-training approach, based on online meetings and PDFs, proved inefficient and costly because volunteers are scattered across many Danish cities, making it impossible to gather them all at once and straining the organisation's ability to onboard new volunteers -- which is what motivated the shift to the online academy.

Implementation

Indicative cost
Low (< €50k)
Time to results
Short (< 1 year)
Staffing & skills
all-volunteer female role models/mentors, supported by corporate/partner stakeholders (K&W, PwC, Kold Partners, Teknologipagten, CanopyLAB)

Conditions for success

  • visible female role models to counter the stereotype that IT/tech is not for girls
  • focusing on girls' individual, genuine interests rather than a fixed curriculum
  • free access regardless of ethnic, economic or social background

Common failure modes

  • volunteer training that relied on scattered in-person meetings and PDFs proved time-consuming and costly, and was hard to scale because volunteers are spread across many Danish cities, constraining intake of new volunteers
