Context

In May 2026 a team from the University of Melbourne's Centre for the Study of Higher Education travelled to Divine Word University (DWU) in Madang, Papua New Guinea, to co-deliver a workshop on AI in higher education for DWU's academic and administrative leadership.

Objectives

The visit aimed to build DWU's institutional capacity to govern AI use, establishing standing working groups on AI in assessment design, AI policy and governance, and AI literacy.

Activities

Over three days, University of Melbourne specialists worked directly with DWU's Vice President Academic Affairs and its Centre for Learning and Teaching Director; participating staff received certificates of participation.

Results

Three working groups were formed and tasked with developing DWU's institutional AI governance and policy frameworks across 2026, and DWU's leadership has stated an intention for the pilot to model practice for other Papua New Guinean universities.

Conclusions

As of mid-2026 the initiative remains in its policy-development phase, with no student learning-outcome data yet published.
