Context
This research analyses women's participation in Portuguese politics in relation to their educational attainment, referencing the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic (1976), which grants equal opportunities in education and defends the state's task of promoting equality between men and women and citizens' political-participation rights.
Objectives
To examine the relationship between women's educational attainment and their political participation in Portugal, at both national and local level.
Activities
A two-track methodology: a literature review of the legal regime of the Portuguese higher-education system and the gender parity law (including Decree-Law nº 402/73), and an empirical, descriptive statistical analysis using data from the Portuguese Ministry of Education and Science and the Portuguese Assembly of the Republic on the adoption of gender quotas.
Conclusions
Despite the expansion of the education system and rapid progress in improving baseline qualifications, women's educational attainment in certain working areas remains a challenge; the research provides empirical evidence about the role of women's education in advancing their interests in government and politics.
