Context

Bhutan's Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) partnered with Finnish edtech company Eduten and UNICEF to introduce an AI-adaptive maths platform into Bhutanese classrooms, building on an initial 2023 pilot in 20 schools around Thimphu (6 urban, 14 rural). Eduten's platform, already used in more than 50 countries and in 70% of Finnish schools, delivers one weekly period of AI-personalised maths practice alongside automated analytics that flag pupils needing extra help.

Activities

The evaluated intervention gave pupils one weekly lesson period of AI-personalised maths practice on the Eduten platform, whose automated analytics flag pupils needing extra help and reduce teachers' marking workloads. A UNICEF-evaluated impact study then compared Eduten users against a control group across 32 schools over 10 weeks.

Results

The study found an 11-point gain in overall numeracy and a 4.6-point boost in arithmetic fluency among the 952 participating Grade 5 pupils relative to the control group, with 92% of pupils reporting they liked learning maths this way. However, the evaluation ran for only 10 weeks with a single weekly lesson, and reporting to date does not include statistical-significance testing or confidence intervals; outcome data for the nationwide rollout itself has not yet been published.

Conclusions

Based on these pilot results, MoESD signed a three-year agreement — around Nu 12 million in year-one user fees — to roll Eduten out to all Grade 4 students nationwide from July 2024, including monastic schools, with plans to add Grade 5 in 2025 and Grade 6 in 2026, a scale-up funded entirely by the Bhutanese government.
