Context

Young Scientists Kenya (YSK), a STEM outreach organisation active in Kenya since 2018 with a footprint of 850+ schools across 47 counties, delivered free, hands-on AI and machine-learning training to secondary-school teachers in four counties -- Nakuru, Mandera, Tana River and Wajir -- using the 'Experience AI' curriculum co-developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Google DeepMind, funded by Google.org with support from Kenya's Ministry of Education and the Irish Embassy.

Objectives

The programme aims to build secondary-school teachers' confidence and capability in delivering AI concepts in the classroom, prioritising counties that are historically underserved by digital-skills programming.

Activities

Teachers in the four target counties received free, hands-on training in AI and machine-learning concepts and classroom delivery. A related national exhibition drew 3,000+ student participants competing in AI, robotics and coding categories.

Results

Within six months of launch, the programme had trained 170 teachers and reached an estimated 3,400 students. Teachers reported new confidence integrating AI concepts into lessons and requested further training.

Conclusions

The reported figures are participation and reach metrics rather than an independent pre/post evaluation of student learning; no controlled assessment of learning gains has yet been published, and a separate Raspberry Pi Foundation-documented rollout in different Kenyan counties (led by a different local partner, Tech Kidz Africa) likewise reports teacher enthusiasm without baseline test data.
