This ANES literature item examines Romanian women's political representation in the 2019 European Parliament elections, analysing their presence as candidates, voters and elected representatives, in order to raise awareness of women's role in decision-making and political power.

Results

Women made up 30.96% of candidates on political-party electoral lists and 57.14% of independent candidates, yet only 21.88% of Romania's elected MEPs were women. This represents a 12.5-percentage-point decrease from the 2014 European Parliament elections, when 34.38% of elected MEPs were women.
