FoondaMate was founded in Cape Town in August 2020 by Tao Boyle and Dacod Magagula, two University of Cape Town graduates, to give students in emerging markets a free way to get study help without needing mobile data or a smartphone app.

Activities

Students message a chatbot on WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger with a question, a past-paper topic, or a homework problem, and the bot searches vetted sources and returns explanations, practice questions and downloadable files inside the chat itself — a design aimed at learners for whom WhatsApp is free or near-free through mobile operator data bundles, while a full browser session is not.
