Canada's Translation Bureau built GCtranslate, trained on an 8-billion-word bilingual corpus; a departmental pilot translated 60M+ words in 3 months, reaching 300M+ words by June 2026 as the tool rolled out government-wide through March 2027.
Public Services and Procurement Canada's (PSPC) Translation Bureau built GCtranslate as the first flagship project under the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's Artificial Intelligence Strategy for the Federal Public Service, aimed at routine English-French translation needs.
GCtranslate is positioned as a fast, self-service tool for routine English-French content, explicitly complementing — not replacing — the Translation Bureau's professional translators.
An early prototype, PSPC Translate, launched in June 2025, trained on an 8-billion-word bilingual corpus of Government of Canada text. It was piloted across six to seven departments and agencies (PSPC, Privy Council Office, Finance Canada, Canadian Heritage, FINTRAC, RCMP). Professional translators continue to review output and periodically help retrain the model on curated data.
In its first three months (June-September 2025) the pilot translated more than 60 million words, equivalent to over 3,000 pages of documents per working day. By the government-wide deployment announcement (18 June 2026), cumulative usage had reached more than 300 million words translated, equivalent to over 800,000 pages. Government-wide rollout began 30 April 2026 and is proceeding incrementally across departments until March 2027.
The public record to date documents adoption scale and rollout timeline, not an audited measure of translation quality or cost savings. Future extensions under discussion include Indigenous language support.
