Context

Geekie was founded in Brazil in 2012 as an adaptive learning platform built around personalised study paths for the ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio), Brazil's national university-entrance exam, using AI to diagnose individual knowledge gaps and generate tailored question sequences, video lessons and study plans.

Objectives

In 2013 Brazil's Ministry of Education (MEC) selected Geekie as an official ENEM study platform for public-school students — the only adaptive platform to receive MEC certification. The São Paulo State Department of Education's 'Geekie+' partnership provides free access to Geekie Lab for all third-year high-school students preparing for ENEM, a direct equity intervention for students who cannot afford commercial tutoring.

Activities

The platform diagnoses knowledge gaps and generates personalised study sequences; since 2013 it has accumulated over 12 million students reached, more than 60 million tests taken and seven million personalised study plans generated.

Results

Internal platform data show that students who use Geekie score approximately 30% higher on practice assessments over a two-month period compared with non-users. A 2020 study in the Brazilian Journal of Development examined student experience with Geekie Games and found positive engagement outcomes, though it did not establish causal attribution via a controlled trial.

Conclusions

The 30% performance premium is Geekie's own platform data, not an independently randomised result, and equity coverage is strongest in São Paulo — national reach beyond formal partnerships depends on students self-selecting the platform.

Implementation

Indicative cost
Medium (€50k–€500k) — Free for São Paulo third-year students via the state partnership; broader national uptake follows a freemium/commercial model.
Time to results
Medium (1–3 years) — Established platform (operating since 2012); a new state or regional partnership would likely take a school year to roll out fully.
Staffing & skills
Geekie (company) platform and content team, São Paulo State Department of Education administers the 'Geekie+' partnership for third-year students

Conditions for success

  • Official MEC certification validated the pedagogical model nationally
  • State-level partnership (São Paulo) providing free access removes cost barriers for exam-prep students

Common failure modes

  • 30% score-premium claim is internal platform data comparing self-selected users to non-users, not an independent randomised result
  • Equity coverage is strongest in São Paulo; national reach elsewhere depends on self-selection outside formal partnerships

Where it fits
